Global UGRADs are making the most of their time in the U.S., exploring local culture and building connections beyond the classroom. Here are some highlights from the spring 2025 semester.
Jude Gabriel Espanol | Philippines | University of the Ozarks
“I joined a 2-day trip camping in Jasper, Arkansas. We learned that Jasper is known for its breathtaking views and good trails for mountain biking. Daniel, a fellow UGRAD, was also with me in this trip. As a city boy, I never thought that I would have the opportunity to enjoy such immersive experiences with nature and adventure combined.”
Hoang Bao Ngoc Nguyen | Vietnam | Xavier University of Louisiana
“At Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, we don’t have a typical Spring Break—instead, we get a whole week off for Mardi Gras break! This year was my first time ever celebrating Mardi Gras, and it was truly unforgettable. I had only seen parades in movies, so being there in person, right in the middle of the music, dancing, bead-throwing, and colorful floats, was surreal. Over the course of several weeks leading up to Mardi Gras Day, I went to seven different parades! Each one had its own theme, unique “throws” (like beads, coconuts, and even toys), and incredible performances.”
Chido Munyaka | Zimbabwe | University of Missouri – St. Louis
“We visited the Meramec Caverns here in Missouri. It was fascinating to learn that the caves were a result of the erosion of large limestone rock deposits. It is one of the most jaw-dropping caves on the planet. They even screened a short film for us inside the caves. This was my favorite cultural enrichment activity.”
Ketdaovieng Singkeo | Laos | California State University San Marcos
“I had such a fun time roaming around Los Angeles and San Francisco! In Los Angeles, I checked out the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Then I headed to San Francisco and visited Grace Cathedral, the Golden Gate Bridge , and the Palace of Fine Arts. So many good memories!”
Josue Arevalo | El Salvador | University of the Ozarks
“On April 28th, I attended my very first rock concert. I couldn’t be happier that it was to see my all-time favorite band: Linkin Park. The show was absolutely incredible, full of powerful music and high energy from start to finish. This unforgettable experience was made possible thanks to Global UGRAD and the cultural enrichment allowance.”
