Global UGRAD students are making a meaningful impact through community service activities across the country. From tutoring local youth and volunteering at food banks to participating in environmental cleanups and supporting local shelters, their volunteerism distinguishes them as UGRADs. Check out some inspiring highlights from our Spring 2025 cohort below!
Hoang Bao Ngoc Nguyen | Vietnam | Xavier University of Louisiana
“In February, I had the opportunity to participate in a Mardi Gras community service activity at Xavier University of Louisiana, our beloved HBCU [Historically Black College and University] in New Orleans, Louisiana. We volunteered as hospitality staff for a pre-parade celebration, where people gathered to celebrate before heading out for the parade. This experience has become one of my core memories during my semester. We had a fantastic time working together and collaborating smoothly to provide the best service possible. During the event, I also had the chance to observe how the celebration unfolded. To my surprise, they introduced the parade’s King and Queen, which greatly expanded my understanding of Mardi Gras traditions in New Orleans.”
Pauliasi Niumarawa | Fiji | Central Methodist University
“At Central Methodist University, Service Day is a special time when the entire university pauses from regular classes and works to give back to the community. Students, staff, and management came together with one heart and one purpose: to serve through acts of kindness like cleaning, painting, and donating. My group had the opportunity to pack hygiene kits for those in need. We shared not just supplies, but also love and care across all walks of life. I’m grateful to be part of something so meaningful.”
Ilianne Zelaya Ramirez | Honduras | Georgia College State University (GCSU)
“My most recent community service experience was chemical monitoring at Tanyard Creek in my host community. This is, by far, the volunteer activity I’ve enjoyed the most as a STEM student, and I’m glad I could give something back to my community here in Milledgeville. Taking care of the ecosystem near GCSU and making the environment suitable for wildlife by applying my knowledge and skills to this area is something that makes me proud. I will definitely continue assisting in the next steps of this project.”
Kanchana Senbouttalath | Laos | University of Central Missouri
“I had the privilege of volunteering at a special basketball tournament, supporting individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities. It was truly inspiring to witness their enthusiasm and love for the game. What touched me the most was meeting the wonderful adoptive parents who have opened their hearts and homes to children with Down syndrome. Their kindness and dedication are truly admirable, and it’s a beautiful reminder of the power of love and inclusion.”
