Experiencing America and its culture is a key component of the Global UGRAD Program. While traveling to famous tourist destinations across the country is a highlight, some of the UGRADs’ most memorable adventures are those in their host communities and states. Daniel Arevalo | El Salvador | University of the Ozarks
“At the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, we have had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the stunning landscapes that “The Natural State” has to offer. We have gone biking, hiking, camping, mountain biking, and indoor and outdoor rock climbing. As a person who enjoys physical activity, this has been a dream come true. Our recent visit to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in Jasper, Arkansas, was full of adventure. The biggest challenge was rock climbing, which tested not only my endurance but also the strength of my fingers. Of course, I took my UGRAD banner to the top.”
Enkhjin Natsagdorj | Mongolia | Central Methodist University
“I had the incredible opportunity to share my beautiful Mongolian culture at Linn Memorial Church, where my fellow UGRADs and I have been volunteering. I wore my traditional attire, the “deel,” and felt so proud representing my heritage. It was a wonderful moment; everyone in the church listened so attentively, and many came up to me afterward with kind words that truly made me emotional.
This experience reminded me exactly why I came here. I made new friends who supported me and came to watch me speak which meant so much. I’m deeply thankful to the Global UGRAD Program for making this possible. Without it, I wouldn’t have had the chance to grow in this way, share my story, and build these meaningful connections. Also, my English has improved so much! I still remember the first day at church, I was so scared to talk to anyone. But now, I am confident. I wanted to talk, and I felt amazing.”
Flavio Skoti | Albania | Georgia College & State University
“I recently attended the Flannery O’Conner 100th Anniversary Festival. Flannery O’Connor was a renowned Southern writer of Irish descent, recognized worldwide for her literary talent and unique voice. At the festival, I had the chance to explore the home she once lived in, gaining insight into her life and the rich heritage of the American South. Adding to the atmosphere, a lively Southern band performed in her honor, bringing the spirit of the region to life through music. It was a meaningful and immersive experience that deepened my appreciation for Southern literature and culture.”
