The Global UGRAD Spring 2025 cohort has arrived, diving headfirst into campus life and discovering the unique charm of their new communities. From novel weather to new flavors and impressive university facilities, their first weeks in the United States have been filled with enriching cultural experiences. As they embark on what promises to be a transformative semester, UGRAD students at host institutions across the country share their first impressions and memorable moments.
Lina Dowara | Egypt | University of Wisconsin – Stout
“One of the biggest surprises on campus has been the free ice cream after lunch and dinner, even though it’s -4°F! Another surprise was that I walked across a frozen lake – I still can’t believe that I did that! My first impression of people in the Midwest is that they are incredibly welcoming, especially after learning that I’m an Egyptian exchange student. Although the weather is freezing, the warmth of the people creates the perfect balance.”
Jaylin Ortiz Bautista | Dominican Republic | Troy University
“Everything is incredible and the campus is amazing to me; it is very big compared to the universities in my home city. I found it interesting that the university provides on-campus housing for students as well as a gym and a dining hall, because it is not like that in my country.”
Sherry Karimi Karithi | Kenya | University of the Ozarks
“My first days at the University of the Ozarks have been amazing, and the people here are very friendly. Everyone is so nice and genuinely wants to know something about my country. I carried some trinkets from home, such as snacks and bracelets, for the other UGRAD students in my school. The classes are somewhat different from the ones at home, but they are all really interesting.”
Aryan Kumar | India | Central Methodist University
“My host city, Fayette, Missouri, looks absolutely magical covered in snow! Witnessing snowfall for the first time has been an unforgettable experience. The other UGRAD students and I have had a lot of fun hanging out and discussing each other’s countries and cultures, which has been fascinating and enlightening. Central Methodist University is giving us endless memories and so much love!”
Charmain Phiri | Zimbabwe | University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire
“January started off with a fast-paced orientation, followed by the start of lectures and thrilling on-campus events. We are truly having a great time in our “winter wonderland” at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire (UWEC). This is such a great opportunity to showcase our cultures and countries as well as to network and learn about the local community. I hope that everyone else is having a blast too.”
Flavio Skoti | Albania | Georgia College & State University
