Campus Visit: Emporia State University

Spring 2024 Global UGRAD students at Emporia State – (L-R) Mykhailo Sheliakov (Ukraine), Phil Justin Pangilinan (Philippines), Patricia Wanariu (Papua New Guinea), Meriem Slimani (Algeria), Sarah Halligan (UGRAD Program Officer)

In March, Sarah Halligan, Global UGRAD Program Officer, had the opportunity to visit Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. During this visit, she met the four Global UGRAD students studying at Emporia State this semester and explored the Emporia State campus. Emporia State has hosted Global UGRAD students since 2014, and the students currently attending are thoroughly enjoying their experience. World Learning’s contact, Jessica Brinkman, the Study Abroad and Cross Cultural Programming Coordinator, was kind enough to show Sarah around campus including the university’s gym facilities, housing, and many other places of interest. Due to its small size, it is easy for students to walk around campus, and the university offers free bike rentals for students to explore the community.

Emporia State’s Student Union

Emporia State has many resources available to students including a student involvement center. The director of this center has assisted the Global UGRAD students in finding volunteer opportunities throughout the semester. Students can also access tutoring and writing centers on campus, where they can have their papers reviewed before submission. Sarah also visited the dining hall with the students, which was the perfect time to get to know each of them as well as explore the dining facilities and options Emporia State has to offer.

Fossil exhibit on Emporia State’s campus

Emporia State also boasts a number of interesting museum exhibits on campus. One such example is a temporary exhibit displayed in the library that covers the founding of the town and university told through historical photographs. Another building features a fossil and gem display that allows students to learn more about the natural history of the area. These exhibits represent a wonderful opportunity for Global UGRAD students to connect with the communities and the history around them.

Thank you to Emporia State for continuing to foster a supportive community for UGRAD students.
