Alumni Updates – Burma & Philippines

Burma

 Nan Sandar Kyaw (2010-11) is running a capacity building group called DeNx Generation and is also in his final year of undergraduate classes in Chinese.Nan is also a freelance tutor for business management students, and is an an executive member of Apex School of Management Alumni Group. Thet Mon Myat Thein (2010-11) is working for the development for Myanmar women as women’s rights officer at the international NGO: ActionAid Myanmar. May Phyo Phyo Aung (2010-11) is a freelance tutor for business management students and is also running an online fashion store. Myo Myint Aung, Sai Tun Lin Aung, Thinzar Kyaw, and Phyu Pannu Khin all (2010-11) are studying for advanced degrees back in the United States.

Chan Peng (2012-13) is still studying Business Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology (Liberal Arts Program). DD Seng Htoi Aung (2012-13) is working part time job at “Job Hunting” Agency. She is still studying English Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology (Liberal Arts Program).  Eaint Thway Khin (2012-13) is currently working as an English Tutor at Imperial Merit Education center. She is still studying Social Studies Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology ( Liberal Arts Program).

Htay Tin (2012-13) volunteers himself to teach English to the students who are going to take Myanmar Institute of Theology ( Liberal Arts Program)’s entrance exam. He is still studying Business Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology ( Liberal Arts Program).

Htet Oo Lin (2012-13) volunteers in teaching English at Monastery Education center.He is still studying Social Studies Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology ( Liberal Arts Program). Ja Mun Mai (2012-13) is leading and teaching at BARS Entrance Exam Guide (BEEG) for Kachin Students as she was selected as a head of Educational Department of Kachin Students (BARS). She is still studying English Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology (Liberal Arts Program).

Khaing Zin Oo (2012-13) is working as an English tutor and working as a part time translator.She is still studying Business Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology ( Liberal Arts Program). Khine Myat Kywe (2012-13) is currently working as a freelance translator and an English Tutor for the students taking part in Matriculation exam. She is still studying Social Studies Major at Myanmar Institute of Theology ( Liberal Arts Program). Nang Aye Aye Htun (2012-13) is volunteering at Sun Moon Light international Pre-school in Tarchileik. She will go back to school when school resumes.

Sit Maw (2012-13) is participating as an active member of the Yangon School of Political Science. Since returning home he became a trainer for iPACE (Institute for Political and Civic Engagement), a program funded by USAID. He is also helping the National League for Democracy education network helping them create a new resource center. The Saint (2012-13) volunteers sharing the application process of her Global UGRAD experience, U.S pop culture, and her efforts to Grade 10 and 11 students from students around Mandalay. She is going to pursue a degree in BA (Honors) in Social policy and Administration at HK Polytechnic University. Wint Wah Win Thoung (2012-13) is learning french in order to study abroad in France next year. She is currently volunteering as an English teacher at monastery education center.

Philippines

As part of her requirements in her senior year of university, Pia Besmonte (2011-12) left Manila to teach in Bicol University under the Normalite (3NS Local Erasmus Mundus) Exchange Program, which lasts from June to October 2013. She teaches English and world literature for seniors in high school. Among her pupils are three AFS students from Japan, Germany and France. John Briones (2011-12) is on his final year at the University of St. La Salle and continues to head the Commission on Elections of his school’s student government. He is also one of the university’s La Sallian Ambassadors, which leads him to go to different high schools to promote La Salle for future college freshmen. John has also received a full scholarship on his senior year by working as a student assistant at the USLS Institute for Negros Development. Part of his job as a student assistant is to conduct and organize student leadership trainings. He also gets to meet with foreign guests and take them on tours in and out of campus. In the next few months, John will be taking an entrance exam for law school.

Dexter Caluza (2011-12) Dexter graduated cum laude last April 2013 with the degree Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. He is currently reviewing for the October 2013 CPA Board Exam. Jonas Paul de la Cruz (2011-12) Jonas is preparing for the November 2013 licensure exam for civil engineers. Earlier this year, Malcolm Flores (2011-12) organization with fellow UGRAD alumnus Ryan Madrid led a 10-week leadership formation training at Xavier Ecoville, a resettlement site for the survivors of Typhoon Sendong. The program taught the youth trainees at Xavier Ecoville to independently organize events for their community. As of March 2013, these trainees have been forming a youth organization they plan on registering at the National Youth Commission (NYC). Malcolm also won the AMDG Outstanding Student Leader of the Year Award at Xavier University last March before graduating with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan on May 18, 2013. He is currently reviewing for the CPA licensing examinations set in May 2014 and has been giving talks about leadership to student organizations and high school student body governments over the past months.

Sam Garcia (2011-12) is on his senior year in Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. He is the Managing Editor of the Crusader Publication, his university’s official paper. He continues to get work exposure as a nursing student, experiencing new rotations in the hospital: the Emergency Room and the Intensive Care Unit. Sam is also working as a researcher for a UK-based consultancy firm, The Hill Consultancy, as a freelancer. Malaya Negad (2011-12) is in her final year of college and is hoping to make it with honors this April. Along with her accountancy majors, Malaya took up conversational Nihonggo and Spanish II as additional credits. Amon Pacasem (2011-12) earned her degree in Bachelor of Science in Accountancy last March 24, 2013. She is currently reviewing for the October 2013 CPA Board Exam. Before graduating, Amon was appointed senator at her university’s Supreme Student Government, where she headed two committees. She was also the assistant editor-in-chief of her batch yearbook. Jessica F. Santiago (2011-12) continues to work for a television network. She recently trained in creative writing from May to June 2013. Learning, for her, does not stop after college.
