Community service is a long-standing tradition of the Global UGRAD Program. Volunteering allows students to familiarize themselves with their local communities and connect with a diverse array of new people.
During the fall semester, and especially around Thanksgiving and the December holidays, food banks and pantries become a popular destination for volunteers, and a much-needed resource for communities. Om Upadhyay, a student from India attending the University of South Dakota. Om recounted his experience serving his American host community:
“As an international student at the University of South Dakota, I’m passionate about giving back to the community. Every Thursday, I volunteer at Charlie’s Cupboard, providing free food to students in need. I also dedicate my Fridays to United Way of Vermillion’s Feed South Dakota, managing food check-in and registration. So far, I have completed more than 60 hours of volunteer commitment and, in the process, made many wonderful friends who share my passion for service. My involvement extends to the Vermillion Food Pantry and Emergency Food Network of South Dakota. Notably, I participated in the Feed the Funnel program, which packed 10,000 meals.
I wanted to immerse myself in the local community and make a meaningful impact. Volunteering at Charlie’s Cupboard, United Way of Vermillion’s Feed South Dakota, and the Food Pantry allowed me to address food insecurity, a critical issue affecting many students and community members. Through these experiences, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of community engagement and the challenges faced by marginalized groups, as well as the importance of community support and social responsibility.”
When asked what he would say to future students, including anyone interested in volunteering with a food pantry, Om shared this:
“Begin with a few hours a week and see how it fits your schedule. Identify causes that resonate with you, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, meet diverse people, and broaden your perspectives. Don’t underestimate the impact of your time; every volunteer hour contributes to creating positive change. Volunteering is an excellent way to meet like-minded individuals and professionals in your field.
Get familiar with local organizations, research, and explore volunteer opportunities in your area. Volunteering helps you understand local customs, values, and social issues. Volunteer experience demonstrates your commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. Connect with fellow volunteers and community members to expand your social circle.
Volunteering has enriched my university experience, fostered personal growth, and deepened my understanding of service. I encourage everyone to explore volunteer opportunities and make a positive impact in their community.”
