World Learning Visits Host Campuses!

This fall, World Learning staff resumed the practice of traveling to select Global UGRAD host campuses. These types of visits allow the World Learning team to learn more about each university and its staff, as well as provide time to get to know some of our Global UGRADs in person and understand their campus experience. This past October and November, Jordan Ferrick and Amy Broome traveled to Fort Myers to visit Florida Gulf Coast University and to New Orleans to visit Xavier University of Louisiana, respectively. Both trips were a great success, as you’ll read below!

Florida Gulf Coast University

FGCU’s campus beach

Jordan visited Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in early November where she toured its beautiful campus, which even has its own beach! She was impressed by their state-of-the-art recreational facilities and their campus-wide emphasis on sustainability. FGCU requires that every student participates in community service hours in support of sustainable initiatives!

She met with staff from the Global Engagement Office and others in key positions supporting the Global UGRAD Program in various capacities at the university. She connected with the four Global UGRAD students on campus and learned about their experiences, from adjusting to cultural differences, making new friends, and receiving the hospitality of others.

In mid-October, Amy traveled to New Orleans to visit Xavier University of Louisiana, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) established in 1925. Xavier boasts a robust community service program, “Mobilization at Xavier” (M.A.X.), which connects students with volunteer opportunities with multiple organizations off campus, and with the on-campus Gumbo Garden and Vincent’s Vault (food pantry) initiatives.

The campus itself is located a short bus ride away from key New Orleans attractions and boasts robust lab science programs –particularly in biology. Amy had lunch with the two Global UGRAD students on campus just a few days before they embarked on a day trip to tour a swamp!
