Global UGRAD Staff Goes West!

Site visits provide a unique opportunity for World Learning staff to experience life on the campuses of Global UGRAD participants.

In April, Program Officer Roya Zahed had the opportunity to visit Western Washington University (WWU), a Global UGRAD Program host since 2013. In total, we have sent fifteen participants to WWU, not including this year’s three students from Paraguay, Russia, and Malaysia.

The school is 1.5 hours north of Seattle and has a total of 15,000 students. In addition to offering robust programs in communication, education and the sciences, the campus is perfect for nature lovers! Deer jaunt around the grounds and Bellingham Bay is only a 15 minute walk away. WWU itself is an outdoor sculpture garden and around every corner is a piece of art with which students can interact.

During her visit, Roya had the pleasure of meeting with international student adviser, Abigail Borchert and the Director of International Student & Scholar Services, Richard Bruce. The Global UGRAD team at World Learning thanks the staff at Western Washington University for their commitment to the program.

In May, Senior Program Officer Bethany Gilchrist landed in New Mexico to visit our four Global UGRAD participants at New Mexico Highlands University – just in time before final exams! Situated in the small town of Las Vegas, this first-year host institution has provided our students a real sense of community and adventure. Located in the northeast of the state, the campus is nestled beautiful mountains and two national forests: an ideal location for nature enthusiasts! The newly-opened Outdoor Recreation Center, which provides outdoor gear and schedules weekend excursions, has been a frequent locale for the Global UGRAD participants.

During her visit, Bethany met with Global UGRAD adviser Tina Clayton, Director of the International Education Center; Dr. Edward Martinez, Vice President for Strategic Enrollment; and Dr. Sam Minner, President of the university. Thank you for making time in your busy schedules to create this memorable visit
